What is the difference between crimping and welding?

Clicks:388 Update time:2021-03-13

    Crimping and welding are the two most common wiring methods when connecting connectors or terminals. According to different usage scenarios and different types of cables, choose different wiring methods.

    For crimping, use special cold-pressed terminals and crimping tools. When crimping, make sure that the terminal is in firm contact with the cable conductor to meet the tensile requirements, and there should be no broken wires or long exposed copper wires. After crimping, insulating sleeves are generally used to cover the crimping point. After the terminal is crimped, usually use a screwdriver or a wrench to screw it into the wiring hole or terminal;

    For welding, use an electric soldering iron, and solder wire is generally used. Solder the cable to the terminal, and then cover the weld with an insulating sleeve.

    So what are the differences in the use of these two wiring methods?

    1 The tools used are different. The electric soldering iron generally needs to use an external 220V power supply, and it is also necessary to wait for the electric soldering iron to heat up and dispose of the tin slag. It is more convenient to use a crimping tool, especially when it is more efficient in on-site repairs.

    2 Crimping is generally used for cables with a large conductor cross-sectional area. Cables below 0.5mm2 are easy to be crimped or broken during crimping; while soldering cables above 4mm2, in order to make the tin wire flow into the cable, the soldering iron tip stays If the time is too long, it will cause the cable to overheat. Therefore, the larger the cross-sectional area, the more suitable the crimping is.

    3 Some cable conductors are not pure copper wires, but other materials or copper wires are plated. It is difficult to hang tin and penetrate tin when soldering. At this time, only crimping can be used.

    4 But when the connector pins are fixed and the pin spacing is very close, only welding can be used, and the crimping tool has no operating space.

    5 The cable connection is in some places that need to be fixedly installed and repair is not considered. Generally, welding is considered.

    6 Welding is prone to false welding, and crimping is prone to false pressure.

    7 The crimping terminal is disposable and cannot be restored after forming; while the welding can be repeated welding.

    8 The soldering temperature is generally 180~220℃. If the temperature of the cable is higher than this temperature, the soldering part of the cable will fail.
