    Different working conditions will produce different gas discharge phenomena and have different discharge properties. When studying the phenomenon of gas discharge, the discharge is usually divided into two categories, one is non-self-sustained discharge, and the other is self-sustained discharge. The phenomenon that the discharge transitions from non-self-sustained to self-sustained is called gas breakdown.

    Non-self-sustained discharge refers to the phenomenon that the discharge can only be maintained under the condition of an external ionization source. For example, when the discharge tube is irradiated with ultraviolet light or radioactive rays, the gas in the tube can produce a certain number of charged particles. When a certain voltage is applied to the electrode, the charged particles in the electrode space move under the action of the electric field to form a current, which is Gas discharge phenomenon. If the external ionization source is removed at this time, the decrease in the number of charged particles will cause the discharge to fail to be maintained and extinguished.

    Self-sustained discharge refers to the phenomenon that the discharge can be maintained even when the external ionization source is removed. Under the action of the external ionization source, when the voltage at both ends of the discharge tube increases to a certain sufficient value, the current in the tube increases suddenly. If the ionization source is removed at this time, the discharge current is still large enough, that is, the formation of the discharge at this moment has nothing to do with the existence of the external ionization source. This state is called self-sustained discharge. The process of discharge from non-self-sustained discharge to self-sustained discharge is called gas breakdown process or ignition process.
