The two main functional characteristics of vacuum connectors are vacuum sealing and energization, that is, the connectors must have airtightness and conductivity. Electrical insulation is required between the connectors and between the connectors and the substrate. Glass and ceramics are very suitable sealing and electrical insulation materials.
So how to achieve a seal between glass (or ceramic) and metal conductive parts? That is the sintering process. Glass sintering is to heat the glass (or ceramic) to a molten state so that it can be closely combined with the metal surface, and then cool down to solidify the glass (or ceramic) into a shape. Sintering adopts a special sintering furnace, multi-temperature zone and temperature zone residence time control, while controlling the process atmosphere during sintering. The sintered glass (or ceramic) must be dense without bubbles and cracks, so as to ensure good airtightness and electrical insulation.
Since the melting point of glass is as high as about 1000°C, the vacuum connector using the glass sintering process has high temperature resistance. The chemical characteristics of the glass are stable, which ensures the connector has a long service life.
